BBC now provides subtitles for 100% of programmes

BBC now provides subtitles for 100% of programmes on the BBC's 7 main channels covering BBC One, BBC Two, BBC Three, BBC Four, CBBC, Cbeebies and the BBC News channel.

The corporation also subtitles around 800 hours of output on BBC Parliament but this is not covered by the 100% commitment, as well as providing subtitles for a high proportion of the BBC HD channel, and increasing amounts of subtitles for BBC iPlayer.

BBC subtitles provide a transcript of the TV soundtrack, helping deaf and hard-of-hearing viewers to follow programmes. They have been available since the early 1980s.

No other UK broadcaster matches the proportion of programmes subtitled by the BBC. It is committed to subtitling 100% of BBC TV programmes from April 2008.
