Skillset
Skillset - opening up the media industry.
Certain demographic groups are still under represented within the workforce. For this reason, diversity remains a key focus for the creative media . Skillset is fully committed to help create more transparent access and progression routes within our industries, in order to make them more representative of society as a whole.
Skillset recognises that the creative media industries both serve, and draw, on the talents and skills of a diverse population. The diversity consists of visible and non-visible differences. It is the harnessing of these differences which results in a globally successful, creative and productive industry.
Skillset Employment Census 2006 highlights the following gaps in the industries' demographic make-up:
- Employees with disabilities account for only 1.0% of the workforce.
- Only 38% of audio visual employees are women.
- Only 7.4% of employees are from minority ethnic groups.
- Those aged 50 years and over make up only 15% of employees.
Skillset's response to industry's needs with regards to diversity is set out in our Diversity Policy, Strategy and Action Plan and our Disability Action Plan.
The business case for diversity is particularly strong in the creative media industries where there is a high concentration of niche markets, and an emphasis on innovation and creativity. Diverse workforces lead to new ideas, new ways of working, different perspectives and new and unique stories about the world we live in.
Skillset is leading the charge to diversify talent coming into the creative media through services ranging from careers advice and guidance sessions to funding and training opportunities.
