New Paper Demystifies the Recruitment Process
The Employers' Forum on Disability launches 'Briefing Paper 15: A practical guide to managing recruitment' to take the guesswork out of what is, and isn't, reasonable for employers when recruiting disabled people.
Sponsored by income protection provider UnumProvident, 'A practical guide to managing recruitment' will make it easier for employers to adopt a best practice approach - and make reasonable adjustments - in their recruitment and selection practices.
The employer's duty under the Disability Discrimination Act (1995) is clearly explained, with practical answers to the following:
- What simple steps can I take to ensure an inclusive approach to recruitment?
- Exactly what is a reasonable adjustment and how much is it likely to cost?
- Am I inadvertently missing out talented applicants because my website is inaccessible to disabled people?
- Is my employment agency asking what adjustments are needed for an interview? Am I at risk if they don't?
The paper takes managers through a range of practices - including drawing up job specifications, web-based and print applications, using employment agencies, short listing, interview questions, ability testing, health examinations and job offers.
Practical steps and case studies - including Centrica's highly successful 'Recruitment that Works' initiative and analysis of the Murphy & Sheffield Hallam University Court Case - highlight the benefits of a truly inclusive workforce, and the importance of risk management.
“There are more than 2 million disabled people in work already,” says Susan Scott-Parker, Chief Executive of the Forum. “All the research shows that when businesses employ disabled people, they come back for more. This briefing paper helps employers to tap into a larger pool of applicants and to benefit from a diverse workforce.”
“As a Gold Card member of the Forum, we are committed to best practice in the employment of disabled people,' says Joanne Hindle, Corporate Services Director of UnumProvident. 'We are sponsoring this briefing paper because we believe that everyone should be respected and rewarded for their skills and abilities.”
This briefing paper is the latest in a highly successful series on a range of topics relating to the employment of disabled people. 400,000 are in daily use by managers across the UK.
