How to make the most of our abilities

The news of Remploy's factory closures has sparked some controversy (Strike ballot over factory closures, May 21). The six main disability charities have come out in favour of the move, as it signifies a move towards the social and economic inclusion of disabled people, yet the unions are worried about job losses and are threatening strike action. We can also add our voice to those welcoming the move, as long as the wider employment implications are considered.

One small but significant point seems to be overlooked - the positive role of employers. The Remploy debate should really be about how we can help employers tap into the talent pool of disabled people working in Remploy factories.

Disabled people will only move into mainstream employment once employers recognise that they have jobs that disabled people can do if only simple adjustments could be made for them.
