Met: Unique training for deaf staff

The Metropolitan Police Service (MPS), Diversity & Citizen Focus Directorate (D&CFD) in partnership with The National Police Improvement Agency, (NPIA) ran a unique Positive Action Leadership course entirely in British Sign Language (BSL) in December last year. It is believed that this is the first time such a course has been run in the UK and has led to the creation of two working groups.

Disability hate crime

As a disturbing trend that marks our times, stories in the news of disabled people becoming victims of hate crime are becoming all too common. The seriousness and difficulties involved in solving such horrendous and spiteful crime raises many questions.

Police forces and the Autism Alert Card

Essex Police and Suffolk Constabulary have helped spearhead a new initiative to ensure police forces recognise autism when providing emergency services.

The new Autism Alert Card was launched by Essex Autistic Society last year in collaboration with Essex Police and Suffolk Constabulary, and since then the scheme has been adopted by other police forces and recognised by the Home Office as good practice. Essex Police alone has issued 250 cards, with over 800 packs sent to health care professionals and local schools for distribution.

Quite recently we received a query about best practice in regard to law enforcement and disability issues from Ontario Provincial Police General Headquarters, Canada.
